The vision of Women’s Network is to be the force that brings women to the forefront at all levels of leadership: corporate, community and civic. We offer custom, high-impact programming, training and access to networks catering to individuals, professionals, and business owners.
Women’s Network was founded in 1978 as women began to enter the workforce in large numbers. Purpose and programming has evolved to support women as the landscape continued to change. In the past three years our program portfolio has expanded to include our signature Community Leadership Institute, in partnership with Leadership Akron; an entrepreneurial workshop series; a number of topic-specific career development programs; and purposeful events celebrating women in the community.
Our membership has grown to 250+ women and we serve over 1,000 annually. Our target market is professional women looking to advance their careers as business owners/entrepreneurs or in the business, nonprofit and civic arena throughout Summit County and surrounding counties. To continue to meet the current needs of professional women throughout our market, we are prepared to move from a volunteer run to a professionally managed organization and from a primarily grant funded financial model to more of an earned revenue model.

In the first year, capitalize on the Akron community’s stated interest in building leadership diversity, as well as our own growth momentum, to pivot the organization from volunteer driven to professionally managed. The Executive Director will be the champion for building the organization’s capacity for continuous program improvement, community impact and growth.
The emphasis will need to be on program development, fundraising and building capacity. To be successful, the Executive Director will need to bring an executive vision and presence coupled with entrepreneurial skills and mindset. The successful candidate will need to build an infrastructure to support growth while maintaining quality, culture and reputation. Over the long term, the Executive Director will lead the organization in its mission to “Connect, Empower and Inspire” and to become the force that brings women to the forefront of leadership.
Required Characteristics & Skills:
Candidate must have a complete commitment to understanding the issues surrounding women’s success, including the challenges in rising to, and maintaining, leadership positions.
Candidate must be a strategic thinker and a planner.
Candidate will embrace the challenge of executing the pivot from a volunteer driven to professionally managed organization.
Candidate will be excited to apply for-profit business acumen and entrepreneurial skills to build capacity to establish and sustain a progressive nonprofit.
o Importantly, this includes sound judgement and the ability to follow through by doing and delegating.
Candidate will understand the components of successful program development, from initial cognition of a “need” through the evaluation of program results.
Candidate will have interpersonal and managerial skills to engage the existing, enthusiastic support of a large volunteer base willing to provide program and administrative capacity.
Candidate will possess the experience and acumen to harness an abundance of potential, untapped resources to support the work.
o Under-sourced financial resources include earned revenue growth via program membership and program fees; broader philanthropic funding; corporate funding through membership and sponsorship, support by individuals with a known interest in the advancement of women.
o Under-utilized resources include the enthusiasm, skills, outreach, and additional capacity contribution of our volunteers and members.
Candidate will be the face of the organization and must have excellent presence to include verbal and written communication skills and intuitive, welcoming interpersonal skills. Must be adept at “reading” an audience and projecting the appropriate persona for that audience, which will range from senior corporate/community leaders to early stage entrepreneurs and women in all stages of their careers.
Ideal candidate will possess the typical executive director skill set: financial management/oversight and resource development, program and event management/oversight, talent management (staff, volunteer, contractors), working with volunteer boards, marketing/outreach, and community/public relations.
The Board of Directors seeks an Executive Director with demonstrated success as s/he will have extreme latitude and flexibility in meeting the goals of the organization.
Proven record of being the “driver” of a successful organization or significant initiative, from vision to end-goal, over a long enough time frame to be definitively evaluated.
Proven commitment to diversity in all its forms and the mindset to seek diversity in every aspect of an organization or initiative (leadership, governance, program reach, etc.).
Candidate will have successful program development, implementation and evaluation experience.
Proven record in multifaceted resource development for a successful organization or initiative (social enterprise, event and program sponsorship, membership growth, grant funding).
Proven record in building partnerships and affecting true collaboration.
Proven record of implementing change, launching new initiatives, scaling, building capacity.
Proven ability to successfully oversee multiple projects, programs, staff and outside support (volunteers and contractors).
Proven ability to work within and across sectors, including at a senior leadership level.
Proven ability to increase throughput with successful marketing, outreach efforts.
