How to help women here, now, forever

14 Jan 2013 2:04 PM | Anonymous member

Friendships that developed among members of Women's Network helped six local women start a groundbreaking Women's Endowment Fund nearly two decades ago.

Through contributions and wise investing, that fund grew to more than $1 million and awarded more than $500,000 in grants -- grants that have inspired, empowered and educated women and girls throughout Akron and Summit County. The group also funded research on women and girls and hosts a bi-annual forum to help define grant-making priorities.

For Women, Forever

In 2012, the fund, a part of Akron Community Foundation, embarked on "For Women, Forever," an ambitious campaign to grow the endowment by $2.013 million by 2013 – the fund's 20th anniversary. Women from all over greater Akron have held fundraisers for the Women's Endowment Fund -- Zumba events and cocktail parties, musical theater performances and wine tastings. Women and men and companies and foundations have begun to open their hearts with gifts and pledges to WEF to ensure a brighter future for women and girls.

Some, like attorney Karen Lefton and former municipal official Kathy Booth, have begun their own charitable funds under the Women's Endowment umbrella, and have engaged their mothers, daughters and other loved ones in improving life for greater Akron's women and girls.

See some of the stories of those we've helped and some of the grants the fund has made. And consider making an online gift. Your generosity will live on, as this endowment fund supports programs for women and girls long into the future.
